I must add (as a relief) it is not hard to understand the city layout and despite the huge size of the city, you won't be lost... I mean, not easily! :)

1) Sultanahmet

This is the centre of the Old City, at the Historic Peninsula. Most of the city’s main sights are here. Surely, this makes it the most touristic area. Sultanahmet houses the Topkapi Palace, Hagia Sophia Museum, Blue Mosque, Basilica Cistern and so many other important buildings.

2) Eminönü

It is the entrance of the Golden Horn (Turkish: "Haliç", Read as: hull-each).

It is a bustling commercial district and the main sea-transport node on the shores of the Historic Peninsula.

The backstreets are clogged with traders and market stalls all the time.

Spice Bazaar, Yeni Mosque, Rüstem Pasha Mosque, Sirkeci Railway Station, Büyük Post Office building are all here, in this lively and crowded neihborhood.
