Where Is Istanbul Exactly?

You are planning a trip to Istanbul but not exactly sure "Where is Istanbul"?

It is very easy to find. Just find a world map and point your finger on the junction of Europe and Asia!

Istanbul is at the Northwest part of Turkey, in the "Marmara Region", which is at the East of Europe.

Istanbul has a very unique location. The city is divided into two parts by the Bosphorus Strait; one part is Europe, the other is Asia..

That’s why we call the city:

"Where East meets West"

Hard to follow on text?

Here are some maps that will ease the pain!

First step: Where is Turkey?

Can you see the red circle and text saying "Here is Turkey" on the map? Then you have found the exact location of Turkey.

Second step: Where is Istanbul?

You can see a map of Turkey, just below. Again, you will see a red circle and text saying "Istanbul" on the map. That is the exact answer to your "where is Istanbul" question. My beloved city is right at the Northwestern part of Turkey, in Marmara Region.

Third Step: Map of Istanbul

Now you know where Turkey and Istanbul are... It is time to see the city layout.

You can see a satellite view below. There is the "Black Sea" on the North, the "Sea of Marmara" on the South and "Bosphorus Strait" connecting the two seas.

By the way, Bosphorus Strait is not a river, it is a waterway connecting two inner seas...

The question "Where is Istanbul?" is history now. We can move on to the City Layout, which will help you find your way back to hotel.

City Layout

Istanbul is divided into two parts by the Bosphorus Strait.

The East of the waterway is the Asian Side, the West of it is the European Side.

The Asian Side is mostly a residential part while the European Side is full of more chaotic and more traffic-loaded business districts.

The two sides are connected with two suspension bridges and sea-transportation...

The two suspension bridges on Bosphorus Strait are;

  • Bosphorus Bridge;

    Located between Ortaköy and Beylerbeyi.

  • Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge;

    Located between Rumelihisarüstü and Kavacık.

Istanbul, is a modern city in an ancient setting. There are many attractions along both shores of Bosphorus Strait, including ancient ruins, picturesque fishing villages, and vibrant green forest areas.

Most Popular Places

You will spend the most of your time on the European (Western) Side of the city. European Istanbul is separated in two by the Golden Horn (Turkish: "Haliç", Read as: "hull-each").

"Golden Horn" is one of the most commodious natural harbors in the world. It was the main port of the city for centuries.

showing

the Golden Horn,

Old City and New City

Old City and New City:

  • Old City:

    The Southern part of the Golden Horn is the "Old City". Also known as The "Historic Peninsula" or "Sultanahmet" or "Sarayburnu".

  • New City:

    The Northern part of the Golden Horn is the "New City". Also known as "Beyoglu" or "Pera".

The major sights and monuments are in and around the Old City and Beyoglu.

Modern heart of the city is the New City; Beyoglu neighborhood, across the Golden Horn. It is the center of art, entertainment, music and education and one of the commercial centres of town.

But the city is big and there are lots of places waiting to be seen...

So don't forget to include a Bosphorus Cruise along the shores and the Asian Side to your plan...

I hope you've found the answer to; "Where is Istanbul?"
